    Uzzell,, Thomas H.
The Technique of the Novel - A Handbook on the Craft of the Long Narrative

Originally written in 1947. It provides an insight into what some publishing professionals thought of the market/genres in the 40s and 50s. The interesting writing advice was adapted from John Dewey's more general 'Art as Experience'. A lot of its basic advice is still en vogue, if pedestrian. A major downside is the author's recurring misogyny. Recommended if you aren't distracted by misogyny.
